Escorted by Toby Bost:
Born and raised in North Carolina, Toby has served Tar Heel gardeners for 29 years as an Extension Agent with N.C. State University’s Cooperative Extension Service. He has authored several gardening books, the latest, The Carolinas Gardener’s Guide, released in 2005. He is a member of the National Garden Writer’s Association.

 

Toby received the Distinguished Service Award from the National County Agents Association for his horticulture programs and publications, including an Appearance Commission Leadership Award locally. He has been a guest on radio and television across the state sharing insightful landscaping information. He has trained more than 400 Master Gardeners and Green Industry professionals. Former assignments since 2000 include serving as director of the Tanglewood Park Arboretum and horticulture professor.

Toby and his wife, Becky, reside in Winston-Salem, N.C.; they have two young adult children. The Bost’s are active in their church, serving leadership roles.

Afternoon visit to The Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden/Children’s Garden

Late afternoon check-in at The Richmond area hotel
Dinner included at area restaurant (The Tavern Restaurant)
Evening: Attend presentation of “Sleuth” at the Swift Creek Mill Theatre. In December 2005, Swift Creek Mill Theatre celebrated its 40th Anniversary as a Richmond institution. This establishment has come a long way since it was taken from a 300 year old grist mill and turned into an intimate space for the production of many splendid theatrical productions.

Saturday, July 14

Depart for Charlottesville, Va. (1 1/2 hr drive)
Monticello: The Home of Thomas Jefferson—House Tour and Grounds ticket

Lunch: Michie Tavern for meal and tour: This tavern dates back to 1784. The dining room features hearty midday fare offered by servers in period attire. Recipes dating back to the 1700’s render a dining experience rich in southern culture and hospitality. The bill of fare features colonial fried checken, black-eyed peas, stewed tomatoes, biscuits, cornbread and a variety of hot and cold dishes.


Afternoon visit to The Keswick Vineyards for wine tasting: Located at the historic 400-acre Edgewood Estate in Keswick, these vineyards are part of theoriginal 1727 Nicholas Meriwether Crown Grant that comprised nearly 18,000 acres on the east side of the Southwest Mountains.

Monday, July 16

Morning: The National Aquarium in Baltimore-Maryland’s leading tourist attraction, housing more than 10,500 creatures
Lunch on own in the Inner Harbor
Travel to Kennett Square, Pa (2 hr est drive time)
3:00pm Estimated arrival at Longwood Gardens—a lecture by Bob Lyons will be requested

Dinner at Kennett Square Inn
Overnight in Wilmington, De

Tuesday, July 17
Breakfast at the hotel
Henry Francis DuPont’s Estate: Winterthur

Lunch included at the estate
Travel to New York City
3:00pm (Est. check-in at New Jersey hotel)
Free evening for dinner on own and enjoyment in the city
**Notation: If conducive to a train station, the group might elect to ride a train into the city. Taking a cab would also be an option. Or, the motorcoach driver could take the group into City (perhaps to the Theatre District,) drop the group off and then pick up the entire group at alater time.

Depart for Petersburg (l hour and 30 min)
Pamplin Historical Park in Petersburg, Va.- This historical park and National Museum of the Civil War Soldier provides an opportunity for exploring and learning about the Civil War and Life in the Antebellum South. The Park includes four museums, four historic buildings, Civilian and military living history programs, and guided tours of the Breakthrough Battlefield and Tudor Hall Plantation.
