No. 2
Pinehurst No. 2 first opened as an 18-hole course in 1907, and Donald
Ross constantly fine-tuned it into a superlative test of every facet of
golf. You have to drive the ball well. And hit long irons well. And most
of all, have a razor-sharp short game. In 1999, No. 2 was the site of
the U.S. Open Championship. On the final hole, Payne Stewart sank a 15
foot putt, the longest in Open history, to defeat Phil Mickelson by one
stroke. The Open will return to No. 2 in 2005. "You have to be alert
and sharp for 18 consecutive holes, otherwise it will jump up and bite
you. I guess that's why the experts rate No. 2 as one of the greatest
courses in the world." - Sam Snead
No. 4
A Donald Ross course which originally was opened in 1919, it was redesigned
by Robert Trent Jones and other noted architects in the early 1970's.
In 1999, Tom Fazio was called in to build a brand new course. Rather than
attempt to modify what Ross and Jones had done, Fazio created a new look
for Pinehurst. The greens are bigger and flatter than No. 2, but fall
off quickly. They are surrounded by dramatic rolls that will test your
short game.
No. 7
While routing No. 7 in the mid-1980's Reese Jones discovered some ancient
bunkers in the woods. As it turns out, they were part of a long abandoned
employees' course Donald Ross
built years ago. No. 7 is unmistakably Pinehurst, but has a mountain flavor
as well. Uphill shots on 2, 3, 5, 9, 10, 12, 13, and 14 require power
and pinpoint accuracy. Concentrate, because
these holes can make or break your game. The last four holes are some
of the strongest finishing holes anywhere, including the picturesque 18th,
a downhill par-five to a green flanked by water.
No. 8
No. 8 opened in 1996 to commemorate Pinehurst's centennial year. Its creator,
Tom Fazio, was pleased to carry on the Pinehurst Tradition. The course
is a celebration of Pinehurst's first 100 years, a century that saw its
trademark sand greens give way to Bermuda grass which, in turn, was replaced
by bent grass. The character and feel of this course, however, is as constant
as Pinehurst itself. No. 8 tests all areas of your game.
