African American residents have
played a significant role in developing Winston-Salem. Simon Green Atkins
conceived the idea of Slater Industrial Academy, which is today Winston-Salem
State University. This itinerary showcases Winston-Salems African
American heritage by detailing its arts and culture, and highlighting
the wealth of African American artistic endeavors in Winston-Salem,
such as the National Black Theatre Festival, the Delta Fine Arts Center
and the Diggs Gallery.
