An African American Focus in North Carolina, Past and Present

African American residents have played a significant role in developing Winston-Salem. Simon Green Atkins conceived the idea of Slater Industrial Academy, which is today Winston-Salem State University. This itinerary showcases Winston-Salem’s African American heritage by detailing its arts and culture, and highlighting the wealth of African American artistic endeavors in Winston-Salem, such as the National Black Theatre Festival, the Delta Fine Arts Center and the Diggs Gallery.

Winston-Salem, North Carolina - 2 Nights, 3 Days

Tour of Old Salem with emphasis on the African American: the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts, The Toy Museum, St. Philips Complex (St. Philips Moravian Church, built in 1861, is the oldest standing African American Church in N.C. Adjacent to it is the newly reconstructed 1823 log church.)

Day 1  Overnight flight to Amsterdam
Day 2  Welcome to Amsterdam!  Welcome Reception!
Day 3  Amsterdam sightseeing and at leisure.  Start your day with an orientation featuring Mint Tower, Dam Square and Museum Square.  Enjoy the Rijks museum—
a diamond polishing factory. Hop-on-hop-off city sightseeing ticket.  During the flowering season a visit to Keukenhof will be included.  Several million flowering bulbs planted across a 70 acre site will make this a spectacular visit.

Day 4  Amsterdam—
Floriade—
Immerse yourself in all things botanical during your visit to the world-famous Floriade Horticultural exhibition.  Held every 10 years, the Floriade is a rare opportunity for you to engage in a global spectacle featuring over 100 exhibitors showcasing their horticultural expertise.  NOT TO BE MISSED!!
Day 5
  Amsterdam-
Apeldoorn-
Groningen Marvel at some of VanGogh’s most famous works with an included visit to the Kroller-Muller Museum.  Visit the Het Loo Palace featuring beautiful formal gardens.
Day 6  Groningen—
at Leisure.  Spend free time  exploring on your own.  Or, you may enjoy a guided bicycle tour of the city!!

Day 7  Groningen-
Volendam-
Amsterdam-A scenic drive through the spectacular Frisian Lake District brings you to Bolsward and Workum.  In Volendam  You will enjoy the art of cheese making and how wooden clogs are made.
Day 8  Bid farewell.
